Our Past Action - Text updated Nov. 2003 ...Since  June 2003

Faced with the unavoidable disappearance of the remaining Alexandria community within a few years the ad-hoc committee has undertaken the following action:

The community and the Egyptian authorities were approached to allow a copy of the registers to be made and transferred outside of the Synagogue. The permission to transfer was denied.

The "Sefarim" have been classified as " Egyptian antiquities" by the authorities.

We have sought the support of important personalities and existing associations in order to submit a Petition  to President Chirac prior to his trip for the inauguration of the new Library of Alexandria

We have obtained the Support of different officials and encouraging Replies from the President's office.

We base our case on the particular Characteristics of the Alexandria community

Our Initiative seeks consensus and information from past members of the community throughout the world . We have to- date received both through associations and directly the support of over 1000 jewish families previously from Egypt , including important Personalities from the world of culture.

If you have not already done so , please support this cause by informing admin@nebidaniel.com

Please inform your friend s and family whom this may concern

As it appears that the Egyptian authorities will only discuss with duly qualified representatives of the community. We have set up "The International Nebi Daniel Association" with representatives in various countries. The constitution and Statutes of this 'Not for Profit Organisation' can be found attached.

The first Council Meeting was held on 14/04/2003. Minutes and picture of the council, may be of interest to you.

The I.N.D.A has secured the services of an international lawyer registered at the Paris Bar as well as at the Alexandria Bar, in order to facilitate discussions with the local authorities or their representatives in Europe, in order to validate legally our position in the face of local resistance to change, and finally in order to structure the preservation of the community heritage.

Our lawyer has requested of the egyptian ambassador the nomination of a fully empowered personality , to whom we would be able to present and with whom we could discuss the situation and seek the best possible solution.

The I.N.D.A seeks nominative mandates from all the past Egyptian Jewish community, and in particular that of Alexandria, to establish strength and credibility to our representation through the lawyer.
Please adhere to this cause: admin@nebidaniel.com

The I.N.D.A has obtained the support of the Central French Consistoire, where Chief Rabbi Sitruk is also President of the European Council of Rabbis. . He has requested the personal intervention of President Moubarak and President Chiracd with regards to the the registers and the Sefarim.

à Since  June 2003

We have added strength to our lawyer’s dossier by requesting a meeting with the egyptian Ambassador.

A full dossier has been prepared and  given in October  to a Member of the European Parliament. During our meeting with him , he promised his active support as a representative of the E.U.

Another complete dossier was handed to M. Dominique de Villepin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the end of October.

All these different dossiers are available to active members  upon individual request

The Council held its last meetin  in London, early October. It was then decided that certain members would visit Alexandria , at their own cost, so as to better present  our position and better understand the local reaction to it. This will take place early 2004.

A « Hall of Memory » Project is underway. We request you study the enclosed  initial project and inform us of your comments, ideas, eventual suggestions and possible contribution to its realisation, in any form whatsoever . Please remember that whilst we have a collective memory , it is  also your own individual one. Donot hesitate . Express yourselves.

Finally our association will survive both through your moral and  financial support.

Kindly download or copy the  document « adhésion-support » and send us your subscription as soon as possible.

 The Long Term Plan

A road map will be defined in common with Members of the association ensuring the management and preservation of our heritage for the coming years.
